Poetry Winner 2018

It’s our second day announcing our Fresher Writing Prize 2018 winners! Today we look at the glorious poetry category, who this year put the monster theme to the test.

Our judge, who had the difficult task of choosing one winner, was award-winning poet Antony Dunn! He has come to a decision and the winner for the 2018 Poetry category is

Corporate Greed by Lindy Newns

Judge Antony Dunn said:

“I really enjoyed this poem’s appetite for sound – its assonance and internal rhymes make reading it aloud a very visceral experience. It’s rare that a poem manages successfully to anthropomorphise an abstract concept like ‘greed’, but this one does – and horribly so. And then there’s that pay-off… the certainty and inevitability of the closing line slamming the poem shut with admirable confidence. Congratulations!”

Lindy will be invited to record a reading of her work into a professionally produced podcast at the University studios!

Congratulations to Lindy and thank you to everyone else who entered the Poetry category this year!

Keep writing!
